Man with year to live wins $50,000 a year

(February 13, 2007) — NAPLES — Wayne Schenk was diagnosed in December with inoperable lung cancer. Doctors at a Veterans Affairs hospital told the former Marine he might live for another year or, if he’s lucky, 18 months.

Five weeks later, Schenk bought a $5 scratch-off High Stakes Blackjack ticket at a drugstore near his home in Ontario County and hit the jackpot. But there was a catch: The $1 million prize pays out in $50,000 annual installments over 20 years.

City fire truck catches fire inside station

Four St. Louis firefighters struggled early Sunday with a blaze in their own firehouse, where their truck caught fire.

It happened about 4 a.m. at Engine House 24 in the 5200 block of Natural Bridge Avenue.

Wisconsin Lawyer Picks Up Drunk Client, Gets DUI

(AP) MADISON, Wis. Police arrested a Wisconsin lawyer for drunken driving after he went to the station to pick up a client who had been arrested for the same offense, reports WCCO-TV, the CBS affiliate in Minneapolis.

Fire hits firehouse; ice causes injuries

DRAPER, Utah (AP) - A blaze broke out in a fire station as firefighters slept, gutting the maintenance area.

Two firefighters suffered minor injuries after slipping on ice that formed on the bitterly cold night as water was pumped onto the fire. The temperature was 2 degrees.
